From Zero to DevNet Hero – My Journey to DevNet Expert

In this blog post, I want to describe my journey to becoming one of the world’s first Cisco Certified DevNet Experts. This achievment has opened numerous doors for me, and I am confident that it will do the same for you. My intention in creating this blog post is to inspire and guide you as we journey through the interesting world of DevNet together. So let us begin this journey!

Beginning the Journey – Apprenticeship at a Swiss Service Provider

My path began with an apprenticeship at a large Swiss service provider, where I became interested in computer science, particularly networking and programming. This hands-on experience paved the way for my future advancement in this sector.

During my apprenticeship, I realized my enthusiasm for computer networks while working in this field. I concluded I wanted to learn more about computer science and provide a solid foundation for my future profession. To do this, I opted to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science.

Building a Strong Foundation – Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science

During my apprenticeship, I recognized the significance of a solid academic foundation to support my career, based on my passion in computer science and networking. With this in mind, I opted to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, which would provide me a wide grasp of the area as well as the abilities required to excel.

I was introduced to different parts of computer science during my studies, including programming languages, data structures, algorithms, and computer networks. My studies not only extended my understanding of the subject, but also assisted me in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. I was able to apply the theoretical concepts I acquired to practical, real-world problems through working on a variety of projects and tasks.

Throughout my education, I pursued my interest in networking by focusing on courses and projects that allowed me to expand my expertise in this field.

Advancing My Career – Permanent Position at a University Spinoff

Harnessing the Power of Automation – Transforming Internal Infrastructure

I got a permanent job at onway, a university spin-off, after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in computer science. One of my first efforts was to automate the internal infrastructure, which included VMs and network components. This taught me personally the value of automation in a contemporary IT architecture. It also taught me how automation can greatly improve efficiency and scalability, making it (in my opinion) a necessary skill for every systems engineer.

Even tough automation takes a lot of time to implement correctly, I think it can offer numerous benefits.

Improved efficiency

Organizations can use automation to streamline operations, remove manual and repetitive jobs, and limit the possibility of human mistake. Lower operating expenses and faster service delivery result from enhanced efficiency.

Enhanced scalability

IT infrastructure can be easily scaled up or down as needed using automation, ensuring that resources are distributed properly and efficiently. This adaptability enables companies to respond rapidly to changing business objectives and customer requests.

Greater reliability and consistency

Because machines follow pre-defined rules and protocols with minimal deviation, automation results in more consistent and dependable processes. This consistency leads to fewer errors and better infrastructure stability. There are less snowflake systems and it’s easier to find bugs.

Increased agility

Automation enables IT teams to respond to changing demands more rapidly, making it easier to integrate new technologies or services. Organizations can use this enhanced agility to remain ahead of the competition and capitalize on emerging trends.

Better resource allocation

IT professionals can spend their time and energy on more strategic, high-value projects by automating dull and repetitive processes. This shift in focus results in better resource utilization and overall productivity.

Making an Impact – Network Automation at a Swiss Retail Giant

I’ve had the pleasure to work on a network automation project for a large retail store in Switzerland for the past year and a half. The plan was to restructure the entire network and stage new stores automatically. This includes router configuration, DNAC and vManage configuration, ISE integration, IPAM administration and so on. I learnt a lot about the practical use of my talents in a real-world setting and it was a pleasure to work on this project.

Becoming a DevNet Expert – Preparing for the Expert Lab Exam

My manager asked me whether I wanted to study for the DevNet Expert exam during a discussion. I wasn’t sure how much work it would be, so I just said yes. Over the next few monhts I studied each element of the blueprint. My girlfriend was also pursuing a degree, so we were able to spend a lot of time studying together.

I went over all of the topics, but I was skeptical whether I could pass the exam. Especially as the exam could only be taken in Brussels. I had to book a flight and a hotel, which only made me even more worried. Then Andreas Bækdahl passed the exam in July and soon offered a bootcamp. There, I received the finishing touches that would prepare me for the exam.

In the end, I had to retake the exam three times, which I believe is usual. You can read about my first, second and final attempt. After each attempt, I went home, assessed what went wrong, and prepared for the next attempt. Finally, this method paid off, and I passed the exam the third time. It’s an extremely difficult exam. But if I can pass, so can you!

I want to thank my company, my girlfriend, my friends and family, Andreas, and everyone else who helped me along the path. Now I hope that my path can serve as an inspiration to you and that I can assist you in becoming the next DevNet Expert!
